Selecting a Front Door
There are many different places to purchase them. You can buy them directly from the manufacturer, at a home improvement center, at a lumberyard, or online. Most manufactured doors will be made by a handful of large companies who then sell them through local distributors and dealers.
To order a replacement door you will need to measure your existing doors height, width and thickness. Many entry doors these days come as an entry system which includes the door jamb. In this case you will need to measure from the inside of the exterior molding to the inside of the interior molding to determine the thickness of the wall. You should also determine whether you will need the knob on the right or the left.
If you choose to purchase a wood door make sure it is made from a high quality wood and features a long-lasting finish. If you choose to purchase an entry system you want to ensure that they components all come from the same manufacturer and where designed to work together. Some entry systems have the components made by separate companies and are then assembled by a third party. These types tend to not be as efficient or durable as those designed and machined to work together.
Some will also include a window. If this is the case for the one you like look for dual paned glass with low E glazing. Security should always be a concern when selecting one look for glass that is resistant to forced entry.
Should you decide to purchase a steel or fiberglass front door look for models that include insulation which will prevent hot or cold from outside from coming in through the skin and frame of the door. You will find that the high quality models of these doors all feature this insulation, which is especially important for colder climates.
